Harry Denton's Starlight Room Now Open After Remodel
September 27, 2011 | Buzzed
After the SF Cocktail Week Legends Awards wrapped up on Saturday night, I had a chance to hit the after party in ~HARRY DENTON'S STARLIGHT ROOM~ and check out the new look by Dawson Design Associates. It’s still very glitzy and glam, with lots of red and gold and pattern and punchy color (drama, baby!). There are some tucked-away booths, plenty of sparkly new light fixtures, and a new dance floor.

Tastemaker's take on city's special treats
June 30, 2007 | San Francisco Chronicle
With Harry Denton, Chronicle Staff WriterIt's not really a party in San Francisco unless Harry Denton is in the room. With a personality to match his audacious taste in clothes, the nightclub impresario is not only the mastermind behind some of the city's finest drinking establishments -- Harry's Bar on Fillmore, Rouge at Polk and Broadway, and our very own Las Vegas in the sky, the Starlight Room at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel -- but also one of our favorite local celebrities. Follow his list of places to see, and you're virtually guaranteed a good time, if not a better wardrobe. Oh, and don't forget to catch Harry at the Starlight Room's weekly Sunday's a Drag brunch. Thomas Pink, 255 Post St. "Best bow ties. My dad taught me to tie my first bow on Easter Sunday in grade school, and I've been wearing them ever since. Pink's selection of hand-tied bow ties is simply remarkable. I have at least 30 bow ties. Gentlemen, please never, ever wear a clip-on tie. Ladies, so sexy if you know how to tie your man's tie." Gump's, 135 Post St. "Not only will you find this to be a Mecca for buying gifts, evermore impressive is the gift-wrapping service. Each gift is artfully hand-wrapped. You open it up and there's the finely pressed tissue, pleated and properly folded into what resembles a glamorous tuxedo shirt. Major triple fold of the tissue paper and such care. Best gift wrapping in the city."My closet. "It's my favorite room in San Francisco. I've spent several decades acquiring three sizes of my wardrobe. Seen, bought, worn and saved every fashion must-have over the years. Plus, totally addicted to shoes." DiPietro Todd Salon, 177 Post St., second floor. "Adam Markarian is the best hairstylist in the city. Adam decided to enroll at the Academy of Art University just to improve sculpturing hair. He's a true artist. Plus, ladies, he's straight and gorgeous!" San Francisco Flower Mart, 640 Brannan St. "The perfect Friday and Saturday field trip. When I do a party, I find my inspiration for my floral arrangements from the seasonal favorites and the Flower Mart's recommended flower of the month. They have the largest array of cut flowers. I do my own arrangements, but if money is no object, call Stanlee Gatti." Ciao Bella, 1 Ferry Building, No. 8. "I've tried every flavor. I first discovered Ciao Bella when I was judging an ice cream competition. It was a blind tasting, and this clear winner made me realize I'd never tasted ice cream this good. Absolutely the best! Rich, smooth and definitely double the fat content of any other ice cream. Try dipping Pepperidge Farm cookies into the vanilla -- now that's heaven on Earth." Frascati, 1901 Hyde St. "The quintessential neighborhood bistro -- Frascati is just that. If you're looking for a neighborhood restaurant, this is the most charming restaurant in town. John and Rebecca Rader give the most amazing front-of-the-house service. ... Try the pan-roasted pork tenderloin." Beach Blanket Babylon, 678 Beach Blanket Babylon Blvd. "Steve Silver and Jo Schuman Silver deserve huge applause for creating and keeping 'Beach Blanket Babylon' going for over 30 years. It's the longest-running musical revue in American history. Every time I send someone to the show, it's his or her most memorable San Francisco experience. The over-the-top hats, the music, the comedy -- the show has been selling out for 30 years; that says it all."The Grubsteak, 1525 Pine St. "An irresistible and sinful late-night cheeseburger. They go over the top by adding a fried egg and bacon. Three thousand calories, at least, at least!" Caffe Espresso, 462 Powell St. "Killer people watching! A spectacular bohemian feel livened with an old-world Italian cafe atmosphere. Order a classic croissant and espresso and claim a sidewalk table where you'll discover great people watching from not one, but two corners: Sutter and Powell. The finest coffee and entertainment around Union Square."Zuni Cafe, 1658 Market St. "In a league of its own. Zuni hits it out of the park with the Caesar salad and roasted chicken. The best in the country. Zuni's a San Francisco landmark for locals and tourists alike. A perfect brunch, lunch or dinner." Wilkes Bashford, 375 Sutter St. "No store in San Francisco can compete with the style and sophistication Wilkes Bashford offers. Wilkes has the best of everything, period. Clothes, absolutely outstanding. Customer service, just great!"De Young Museum, 50 Tea Garden Drive. "It's so beautiful! The exhibits they showcase are spectacular. San Franciscans should be so very proud that such distinguished artists choose to display their work here. Plus, the observation tower view is killer." My mother. "I cannot list my favorite San Francisco things without mentioning my Mom. She raised me, which wasn't easy. She taught me the values of life, but would say, 'Harry you caused me more heartache than your other two brothers combined, but the life you live in San Francisco makes me proud.' My mother is an inspiration to so many people. At 92 years old, she swims at the YMCA 45 minutes, five days a week, plus does yoga twice a week. She has the posture of a 65-year-old because of her swimming and looks at least 25 years younger than her age. She inspires others to live a healthy lifestyle and take health seriously."
Pink Mix Off

BY JORDAN MACKAY - Rosé Champagne is one of the hottest wines on the market these days, and last Monday I had the privilege of attending the Think Pink gala at the Starlight Room. Sponsored by LVMH, the event combined a glitzy party, a tasting of the excellent rosé Champagnes in the LVMH portfolio (Moët et Chandon, Veuve Cliquot, and Ruinart) as well as, uniquely, a cocktail competition using rosé Champagne as the base ingredient. I was honored to judge the competition, alongside veteran bloggers Camper English and Marcia Gagliardi, as well as Nish Nadaraja from Yelp and Maria Hunt, a writer from San Diego. I'd never seen quite so much SF bartending talent turn out for one competition. It was really the best of the best, competing for a $1000 prize. In front of the whole crowd, the likes of Rye's Greg Lindgren, Eastside West's Eric Johnson, Range's Thomas Waugh, Camber Lay from Frisson, Marco Dionysus from Tres Agaves, Todd Smith and John Santer from Bourbon and Branch, and Jackie Patterson from Le Colonial stirred, shook and mixed away. They all brought their A-game, so tasting the Champagne-based concoctions was an incredible treat. The brilliant Camber showed once again that she has tremendous balls by using scotch whisky in a Champagne cocktail (not to mention a rim lined with smoked sea salt, sumac and dried cantaloupe). Marco made something incredibly elegant. Greg captured the essence of berries, while Waugh brought a panoply of interesting homemade syrups. In the end, Todd Smith, the B&B head bartender walked off with the check for making a cocktail that maybe didn't show off Champagne the best, but absolutely kicked ass in terms of complexity and deliciousness. The triumph of the accomplished Smith was no surprise. Rather, most eye-opening was the second-place finisher, Jackie Patterson. She's new to the scene, and I'd never heard of her. But her cocktail was the opposite of Smith's--a model of grace and restraint and respect for the rosé Champagne. I think I'll be soon paying a visit to the bar at Le Colonial, as this Jackie is definitely one to watch.
